Stand-alone stencils and a new way to use them!

When working with those stencils in my stash that don't have coordinating stamps or dies, they can sometimes fall flat.  Adding dramatic colors can really correct that, but today I want to share another way to add detail - with a pen!

Here is the first card I made using the Waffle Flower Crafts: NPC Peony Stencil set...

Quite pretty with those deep tones of orange and brown
but without the pop of white and fun framing you can
imagine it could 'fall flat', right?

Working with Bonnie's wonderful colors at Color Hues #134
I went back in with those gorgeous Peonies in bright pinks for
the blooms and turquoise for the 'sky' - then the switch was turned on using
a Copic fine multi-liner and stencils 1-4 in the set to 'outline' and
give details to the flowers and leaves.

Perhaps it's better to show, than to tell!

I even added intentional 'splatters' for interest.  Then it was time
to finish the piece using a black mat, one of Penny Black's Double Frames,
and a lovely Better Press-ed sentiment from Spellbinders' Bouquet of Hugs sentiment sets.  Here are the inks blended for my stenciling...

I'll also share my stenciled card with my friends at JUGS#825! [thanks Donna!]

I know there will be a ton of cards in Bonnie's gallery - and have you seen her card??  FABulous!  Hurry to TCH#134 to see it and all the other wonderful team makes!

I agree, the outlining really makes a difference and makes those gorgeous peonies shine! Hoping the buds on mine open up soon--I'd be so happy if they are as beautiful as yours! Thanks for sharing with us at Color Hues!

Flat or detailed, they're both gorgeous! I'm partial to the no line look on the first card--with my motor skills, outlining would be a fail for sure!
P.S. Can you enter this into JUGS Stencil Week?

I love the deep colors of the first card, kind of moody. The second card is more what I might create (if I worked with florals like you do). I really like the detail and definition that was added with the pen. Great job, Michele! Thanks for sharing!

Both cards are beautiful Michele. The outlining definitely makes a striking difference, but the colors on both cards are so pretty and I love the way you have framed each one.. Love them both.

We get so used to the stamped outline that we forget how much it adds to our images. When it's not there it's like something is missing. You changed all that with this wonderful technique, Michele. I like the other card but I love this one. Thanks for sharing it with us at Just Us Girls.

Both cards are beautiful Michele. I'm always amazed how different images look when they are stamped with a coloured outline (black, embossed black, gold or silver). Have a lovely day! :)

Stencil tracing is a great way to add umph to an image, and your black outline and brighter colors make this look like a whole different image! I love both cards, but it's so much fun to see the variety you achieved. Fabulous inspiration, Michele!

Tracing the stencil certainly made the images pop and the entire card is just gorgeous, Michele! The frame is a dramatic way to focus the eye onto those gorgeous peonies. Both cards are beautiful, each in their own way. Thanks for playing along with us at Color Hues!

Two lovely cards, Michele, and I'm especially swooning over the one you've shared at Colour Hues. The outlining certainly adds extra oomph to the image; it reminds me of how back-stitching can add dimension to cross-stitch patterns. So thrilled to see you in the gallery with a dazzling delight.
