CAS[E] this Sketch #163

It would have been a perfect time to go all graphic with Chrissy's fun sketch this week ... you'll see what I mean:

However!  I had my newest cache of goodies, and a Crate & Barrel catalog within reach ... you know I cannot resist those table linens - even though I can resist buying them!

This little card turned out to be both a test, and a lesson learned ... here is what happened:

My first attempt with Altenew Wild Hibiscus, Crisp Inks + water spritzing.

You may immediately see the problem ... but let me point it out to you:  the blurred black splats in the upper right corner!!  [Tom immediately wanted to sit down to 'photoshop' it!]

Here is what I learned.  I LOve Distress Inks - let's make that clear - but!  Even after more than an hour?  When I went in to adhere my panel to the card-base, only the Black Soot splattering smeared - what might I have done differently?

Help anyone?  Which black ink should I use for splattering?
That advice, and your visits, are always so appreciated!

I do hope you can see Chrissy's sketch here ... I cannot wait to see your interpretation, and that of my CTS team-mates!

  1. Gorgeous card. I like the colors. And really, if you hadn't said anything, I would not have thought that was smudged ink in the corner. Just looks like more splatters.

  2. It's such a gorgeous card Michelle.. Love the design and the colors too...Regarding the spattering effect I hardly saw the mistake until you pointed it out... So here's my two bit regarding it...I use black acrylic tube paints for spattering.. It dries much quicker than water based colors and once dry it sets it really well and reduces any risk of smudging. Hope this helps :)

  4. Superb! (I hope you read that in a Hugh Grant/Two Weeks Notice accent cuz that's the way it went in my head -- haha) The colors are gorgeous, but I love how you went with the directions of the layout but changed up the scale!

  5. This is gorgeous, Michelle! I've been hemming and hawing about getting this set, but I love how you used it! Wonderful take on the sketch!

  6. Love how this turned out, Michele! It's beautiful!

  7. Beautiful colors Michele...I had not noticed the smudge either. Sometimes I pick up a stray splatter from the work surface as the card front is flipped to put on the adhesive. Could this be the case?

  8. Gorgeous take on the sketch--I'm glad you didn't take the graphic route!
And you might want to try Distress PAINT with its acrylic formula.
Or go the Jennifer McGuire route and lightly scrape and sand off the smudge. :)

  9. Fabulous water color card Michele. I tend to spatter once I have attached my card base to the card front. If you have a border, mask it if you don't want splatters on it. Then it can sit and dry for days if needed. I get antsy, and want card "done" so it would never work for me to wait for the spatters on a card front to dry before attaching it.

  10. Oh I love this! I won't have know that the splatters were a mistake. The colors are stunning.

  11. Another wonderful card Michele! The spatters look great, smudge or no, I like the idea of trying maybe an acrylic base paint, sounds like that could work.

  12. Looks awesome to me! I tend to use watered down Kuretake Gansai Tambi paint and hit it with my heat gun. I'm no patient grasshopper!

  13. This is a fantastic take on the sketch Michele! I love it! And if you hadn't mentioned the smears I never would have noticed. And now that I see them, I think they just look like part of the design!

  14. Oh how pretty!! The smudged splatter looks like it was meant to be there, not bad at all. Can't help you on the ink. My remedy...stick a sequin on it then scatter on a few more for balance LOL!!

  15. Each of us looks at those tiny "mistakes" and go the 'it's completely ruined' route. Not so. Me, I'd have smeared more thinking it would be intentional then. Other than that I have no solution.... Besides that, no one noticed silly girl! And your images are gorgeous. They deserved to be inked up! Pretty colors, pretty card. Hope Miss G. is doing well. I continue to pray for her good health. Bev

  17. Beautiful card Michele, like all mistakes no one notices till you mention it. I'm sure no expert but I reckon anything acrylic would be best. Says one smudge queen to another :)

  18. Your card is awesome, Michele!!! ...and I would not have noticed the smudging had you not mentioned it!!!!! But do remember that your card is handmade so a little imperfection is acceptable!!! I always use watercoloured paint when I do black splattering - dries pretty fast!!!! Your flowers and butterfly are so beautiful and I do love the colours you have worked with and the beautiful watercoloured effect you achieved!!! What a great and creative take on the sketch!!!!
    Have a great day!!!

  19. I was too busy looking at your gorgeous card to see the "blurred splat" you pointed out, Michele! Looks to me like you have many tips on resolving this issue from happening again - isn't our crafty world awesome for sharing like this? :-)

  20. So beautiful, Michele! I wouldn't have noticed the smudge either. Hmm, I have used Black Soot to splatter, not sure I noticed it smudging. Maybe hit it with your heat gun? ♥♥♥

  21. Your card is gorgeous Michele! Like everyone else, I wouldn't have noticed the smudge. Like Kristie, I use my heat tool to dry all of my backgrounds right after I make them :)

  23. Simply beautiful Michele...just beautiful. What a fabulous card, I love those colors and your incredible design! Have a fabulous weekend.

  25. Wow! This is a beautiful card Michele! I love the beautiful colors, the images are just stunning and I am in love with your splatters. I couldn't see your smudges, so I enlarge your picture and I could barely see the smudge! It just looks like it is just part of the card, but if it bothers you, why not do like Jennifer McGuire does and sand it off. I really don't think you need to though. I love the card just the way it is. Hugs, Brenda

  26. This is so pretty! I love the colors you chose and I love the bit of blurring, I think it looks fantastic that way!

  27. I love the color saturation of using spritzed Altenew ink, Michele. I just tried splattering my Black Soot and it dried immediately on Neenah. Maybe it's the paper and not the ink. Just a thought.

  28. No advice about your inks. I wouldn't have noticed any smearing. It looks pretty fantastic to me! Love the colors!

  29. Well, the sheer beauty of these gorgeous images took my whole attention, Michele ... so I never noticed anything awry with your splattering! Still don't ... it's part of the loose look isn't it? I tend to leave anything damp-ish on my cards to dry overnight if I can ... avoids the warping I get from blasting it with a heat gun! Hugs, Anita :)

  30. Beautiful card and compositions and, the splats...hardly noticed, and after all, they are splats! What about a w/c black, like the Gansai Tambi black?

  31. Wow! Absolutely LOVE this card Michele!

  32. WOW!! The composition on this card is STUNNING!!! Love, love, love!!

  33. Didn't notice the smudge....still can't really see it, but I'm glad you asked the question because I loved reading the answers. This is one of the prettiest cards I've ever seen. Ever! I adore it. You'll have to tell me your impression of the crisp inks. Remind me: I'll forget.
